Last year there was a note on the web regarding the problem you stated. It has to do with a plastic washer in the carburator hook-up. If you take it out it should solve the problem.
Another way to fix it is as follows. I know its a little late but Lets see if I can help. Ok with the backfireing this is what I did, Under the muffler near where the pipe meets the muffler just take off the muffler and go to an auto parts store and you know thouse big pipes that the rednecks put on there trucks get just one it will cost you like 20 dollars, either you or a welding shop can fit it on there price that I got was 5 dollars this will eliminate the backfire of a shotgun and give it a deep rumbble like a harley I really like the sound.
